Princess Kate announced Friday on social media she recently underwent surgery and has been diagnosed with cancer.
"I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you personally, for all the messages of support and for your understanding while I've been recovering from surgery," the princess says in the start of the video posted on Instagram entitled: A message from Catherine, The Princess of Wales. "It's been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family, but I've had a fantastic medical team that has been taking care of me for which I am so grateful."
She goes onto say that this past January she underwent major abdominal surgery in London.
The former Kate Middleton joined the royal family when she married Prince William in 2011. The royal British couple share three young children.

"At the time it was thought my condition was non cancerous. The surgery was successful, however surgery after the operation found cancer had been present."
She said her medical team then advised her to undergo chemotherapy treatment.
"This of course came as a big shock and William and I have been everything we can to process this and manage this privately for the sake of our young family," she continues in the video.
The princess goes onto say it has taken time to recover, as well as start her treatment.
"But most importantly, it has taken time to explain this to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them and to be able to explain to them that I'm going to be OK. And I've said to them, 'I am well' and getting better every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal in my mind body and spirit."
She then smiles in the video.
"Having William by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance too, as is the love, support and kindness that has been shown by so many of you. It means so much to us both. We hope that you understand, that as a family, we now need some time, space and privacy while I compete my treatment."
"My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy, and I look forward to being back when I am able. But for now I must focus on making a full recovery," she said. "At this time, I'm also thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer. For everyone facing this disease, in whatever form, please do not loose faith or hope."
As of Friday afternoon the post had garnered more than 1.6 million likes.
"Prayers for a quick and full recovery! Please know we understand your need for privacy during this time and do not let the media pressure you again," one Instagram user commented.
